Fort Mountain park is located a short drive northwest of Ellijay, Georgia going towards Chatsworth. It is a beautiful state park offering a wide range of services to the public. From the parking lot of the trail that goes to the tower, there is a mystery involving a large rock wall. For years historians and the public have wondered about the identity of the builders of the wall.
From the brink of the cliff on the east side of the mountain, the wall extends 885 feet to another precipice on the west side. It's highest parts measure 7 feet but generally rises to a height of 2-3 feet. There are 29 pits scattered regularly along the wall as well as the ruin of a gateway at one point.
Speculation regarding the builders and their purpose covers a wide field. It includes references to sun worship and last ditch defences by prehistoric white people, bloody warfare between rival Indian tribes, defence fortifications for Spanish conquistadors hunting gold, honeymoon havens for Cherokee Indian newlyweds and visits from stone moving space aliens.
Nobody knows for sure which of the legends is possibly true. Visit the site with your own family and guess yourself. The walk is beautiful and on a clear day the view from the mountain overlook is breathtaking. It is well worth the trip.
The Winter months in Georgia can be one of the best times to visit the Georgia mountains if you want great views. Since the hardwoods have dropped their leaves you often get views along the trail not visible in the Spring and Summer months. On many days, a light jacket is all that is necessary to keep you comfortable while hiking to many scenic areas. It is an excellent way to get children to exercise climbing on rocks and looking for interesting natural wonders while walking along the trails.
