Desoto Falls Scenic Area was named after the famous Spanish explorer. In 1880 a Spanish breastplate was found at the base of the upper falls leading some to believe DeSoto traveled through this area. Years later, a sword was also found in the vicinity reinforcing this story.
Located in Lumpkin county, Georgia, this 650 acre park is part of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The park has excellent camping spaces and a day use area that includes restroom facilities. There are actually two waterfalls located at the park, the beautiful "upper falls" and a smaller "lower falls".
Hiking is necessary if you wish to see either falls. The smaller "lower falls" is 1/4 mile in length, but slightly more strenuous since the trail goes up hill with many cutbacks to ease the walk.
The "upper falls" is 3/4 of a mile walk through the woods. It is not as steep and the path has plenty of rest areas along the way making this the most scenic falls to visit. There are several bridges that cross the stream along the way and the path is wider than the path going to the "lower falls".
There are plenty of picnic tables and fire rings available to the day traveler. There is a stream that goes through the public area providing the sound of babbling water. It is a relaxing area to visit and many people bring their children and pets as well.

The upper falls above is a 3/4 mile walk through the woods to the north.
The lower falls are not as impressive, but the 1/4 mile walk will raise your heart-rate!
