North and South Battle at Tunnel Hill Print E-mail
Tuesday, 02 September 2008
Tunnel Hill, Ga.—The Tunnel Hill Historical Foundation kicks off the fall season with the 144th Anniversary of the Battle of Tunnel Hill this Saturday and Sunday September 6th and 7th, 9am – 4pm both days.  The grounds around the historic Clibsy Austin House become reflective of life during the Civil War back in the 1860’s.  The skirmishes that took place in the area are played out on the battleground between the Confederate and Union camps.

With the ongoing concern of gas prices, organizers are quick to remind those within a 100 mile radius that the reenactment is a perfect “tank away” trip.

Over 500 reenactors will begin moving in this week, with most arriving on Friday.  Sutlers will also set up, selling period clothing, accessories, books, and other Civil War paraphernalia.

On Friday, 750 local school children will be on site for a living history education.  The Reenactors volunteer their time to teach the kids about life as a soldier during the Civil War, and provide snippets of history not found in the text books.

“The rifle and cannon demonstrations create a lot of excitement,” say organizers.  “Many use the ticket they receive for free admission to return for the Battle over the weekend.”

Area plein air artists will be joining the crown as they paint on site.  Sponsored by the Art Alliance of Georgia, three of the artists are showing at a special display inside the adjacent Tunnel Hill Heritage Center.  Plein air artists enjoy the light and atmosphere of painting outside on site.

Admission to the reenactment is $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children ages 3-12 and free for children under three.  Parking is free, but donations are gladly accepted by the Boy Scouts who are helping with this aspect of the event.  Admission to the Tunnel Hill Heritage Center is free during the battle weekend Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am – 5:00pm
