Tallula Gorge Overlook

Tallula Gorge is a pleasant 2 hour drive north of Atlanta going up I-85, then I-985. It is truely one of Georgia's most scenic locations anytime of the year. The rim has a variety of trails on either side to allow visitors to take advantage of this beauty from many angles. The trails are well marked and offer everything from a leasurely walks to an invigorating climb along the vertical walls. The paths are wide enough to accomidate hikers from either direction and stairs make the climb easy to enjoy.

Tahllula Gorge is one of Georgia's first tourist destination locations drawing thousands of visitors a year in the 1800s. In 1882, the Tallula Gorge Railroad increased those numbers to thousands of visitors a week. In those times, the river flowed much faster and far more dangerous for those willing to brave a trip to the bottom of the gorge.

Power Station
In 1910 Georgia Power took an interest in building dams on the river to provide electricity. Much of what you see today is a result of this construction. In 1993 Georgia Power and the State of Georgia opened the park that we see today. While the river has been tamed, the beauty of the 1200 foot drop is still hard to resist.

The park itself provides a wide range of activities for visitors. The lovely lake provides swimming in the summer and fishing year-round. There are many trails for nature walks including a path with stairs and a cable bridge to the bottom of the gorge itself. Overall, an excellent day trip or longer for any visitor in the state!
