Is it just me, or is the State of Georgia getting smaller? This week Georgia's DOT released the official map of Georgia. It has eliminated 488 towns and communities in order to clean up the map. This has created an uproar with local residents who live in the effected communities.
Many of these locations have local populations under 2500 people, and a spokesman for the DOT said the change was necessary to improve the map readability. Department spokeswoman Karlene Barron said "We're not under obligation to show every single community. While we want to, there is a balancing act". Of course, itsn't this exactly the purpose for the official map of Georgia, to provide the location of these communities to visitors of our fair state? Many of these towns and communities are in the rural areas, and many residents feel snubbed by the DOT. This can have a dramtic effect on local economic conditions.
