Sitting on the northwest corner of the state, Chickamauga is one of Georgia's best known civil war parks. In 1863, the Confederate and Union forces fought for control of this gateway to the deep south. The historic battle at this location lead to the creation of the first National Military Park in 1890 to commemorate this battlefield.

Today visitors will find a 5200 acre park dedicated to the last major Confederate victory of the Civil War. Throughout this park are numberous monuments, markers and wayside exhibits that make this park special and worthwhile destination for visitors around the world.

There are miles of roads and trails that can fill a day visit to this site. During the summer, thousands visit Chickamauga each week. The park's Visitor Center is a good starting point, providing maps of the area as well as activities that include recreators dressed as soldiers from the period. Demonstrations are provided by these historians and groups often gather to hear the stories they tell of the battles fought here.

You will see many families bring their bikes for rides though the area. In the summer, the weather can be very hot during the day so it is a good idea to bring along plenty of water as well as a possible picknic too! Once you get started visiting all the monuments, it is hard to find time to leave! There is simply so much history to experience during the visit. It can take days to see everything, so there is always something new to see each time you visit.
