Sitting slightly west of the center of the north Georgia mountains is the Apple Capitol of Georgia, Ellijay! This town is best known for the apples it harvests each fall. Driving to Ellijay takes you past many of the apple farms that dominate this area along with traditional fields of farm products.
The city itself provides an opportunity for visitors to enjoy themselves in a town known for their fleamarkets and antique shops. Unlike many small north Georgia towns, the center of this town has a round-about to 5 separate roads. Many towns such as this have their courthouse in the center of their town. Ellijay dedicates this space to the vetrans that fought for our country.
The old courthouse is located off to the side of the round-about. At one time this building served as a hotel. Today, a brand new courthouse is being built behind the old building. Along the side roads from the center of town are a variety of shops, resturants and businesses that serve this growing area.
Ellijay's growth in recent years has been due to the large number of folks moving to the area for retirement. The mountains surrounding this area along with the many streams and rivers make this an ideal area to live. The locals are friendly to visitors and this draws many people to stop in town from all over the state.
