Rain and Strong Winds Shuts Down Highway 129 in Cleveland Print E-mail
Friday, 17 August 2007

Around 5:00 pm Thursday afternoon, rain and strong winds hit Cleveland, Georgia. Large trees in several locations of the city knocked out power and closed roads to travel. David Murphy, Jr., the White County Director of Emergency Management/911 services said the winds came straight down sending trees, limbs and loose material flying over many areas of the city. A large tree just north of the center of the city not far north from the Ingles grocery store brought down power lines and required the closure of highway 129 to traffic to allow the power company and county services to clear the trees and limbs.

Nobody was hurt but a number of homes in the area reported damage and trees down in their area. Highway 129 will be closed for several hours until the downed trees are cleared and it is safe to permit traffic through the area again.
